The Shirataki Geopark highlights the characteristic terrains, geological conditions, natural surroundings and cultures of four areas including Shirataki – Japan’s greatest obsidian production site, where remains of the Paleolithic Age were excavated – Maruseppu, Engaru and Ikutahara. Gambo-iwa, the symbol of Engaru Town, was created by undersea volcanic activities.
