In the feudal government period, Matsumae was so alive with activity that it was said, “Even Edo is not as lively as Matsumae in May.” The Matsumae Clan Residence is a museum containing the reproduction of fourteen buildings, including a warrior’s residence, a herring fishermen’s lodge and a shipping agent’s building. There is also a restaurant offering herring soba noodles and set meals served with sanpeijiru.
