It is a folk performing art started by people who had immigrated to the present-day Honcho area of Atsubetsu from the Tonami area of Toyama in 1895. Ten lion dance performers are inside the lion in this large-scale, dynamic and highly artistic dance. It is designated as an intangible cultural asset by the City of Ashibetsu.
