The Kitakogane Shell Midden comprises the ruins of a large settlement with five shell middens from the early Jomon period. It also includes a grave where human bones of 14 bodies have been found, and anthropological studies on those bones have been conducted by scientists at Sapporo Medical University. It was designated as a national historic site in 1990 and has been open to the public as a historic park since 2000.
